Biodiversity refers to the variety of plants, animals and microorganisms found in a particular region or across the planet. It is not merely a count of different species. Biodiversity also includes the genetic differences within species and the variety of ecosystems in which organisms live. Forests, wetlands, grasslands and coastal regions support distinct communities of living organisms.
Healthy ecosystems provide many services that human societies often take for granted. Forests absorb carbon dioxide, wetlands reduce the impact of floods, insects pollinate crops and microorganisms help maintain soil fertility. When biodiversity declines, these natural processes may become weaker or less reliable. The loss of even one species can sometimes affect several others because organisms are connected through food chains and ecological relationships.
Human activities such as deforestation, pollution, excessive use of natural resources and the introduction of invasive species are major causes of biodiversity loss. Climate change further increases the pressure by altering temperature and rainfall patterns. Conservation therefore requires more than protecting a few well-known animals. It involves preserving habitats, using resources sustainably, restoring damaged ecosystems and involving local communities in decision-making. Effective conservation recognises that human well-being and ecological stability are closely connected.
